David Dean Rock was born on March 28, 1949, to John and Helen Rock in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was raised at the foot of Mount Olympus in Salt Lake City, which he claimed as "his mountain" and loved to climb. He was an avid outdoorsman and, when his health would allow, would ski in the winters and hike in the summers. He also loved running and biking.
On March 7, 1975, he married Nola Wardell. They were blessed with five children.
He died at home on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen Rock; a nephew, Benjamin Rock; and a niece, Morgan Wardell.
He is survived by his wife, Nola; and their five children, Stephanie Walczak, Zachary Rock, Michael Rock, Calob Rock and Joseph Rock; and two grandchildren, Dallas Walczak and Xander Walczak.
He is also survived by his brothers, John (Jayne) Rock and Robert (Becky) Rock of Salt Lake City, Utah; a sister, Chris (Brent) Cunningham of Twin Falls, Idaho; and a sister, Mary (Ted) Polevoy of Draper, Utah; sisters-in-law, Wendy (Dennis) Adams, Cathy (Kevin) Cromar, Elna (Ralph) Scoffield, Jane (Russ) Roberts; and brothers-in-law, John (Barb) Wardell, Tim (Sharmayne) Wardell, Bill (Robin) Wardell, Joe (Sharon) Wardell, David (Vicky) Wardell and Martin (Linda) Wardell; together with numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the LDS Church, 1260 Otter Road, Treasure State Acres, at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 9. Public viewing will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. prior to the funeral. Helena Funeral Chapel is assisting the family at this time.
